DECATUR, Ill. – will host a variety of events and programming created by ºÚÁÏÕýÄÜÁ¿ Student Affairs and student organizations to celebrate Black History Month this February. Student-led events for Black History Month will be carried out by the Office of Campus Life, the Black Student Union (BSU), the Latin American Student Organization (LASO) and the Kappa Zeta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Black History Month originated in 1926 when historian Carter G. Woodson promoted what was known as "Negro History Week" in an effort to educate people about the accomplishments of African Americans. In 1976, the celebration was expanded to include the entire month of February, the birth month of Abraham Lincoln and Fredrick Douglass. Black History Month is celebrated to remember important individuals and events in African American history.

This interactive event invites students, staff, and faculty members to reflect on the meaning of Black history in their own lives. A large banner will be displayed where participants can stop by, write a few words, phrases, or reflections, and add their voice to a growing collective piece.
Each contribution becomes part of a collaborative art wall — highlighting shared experiences, personal connections, and diverse perspectives. Together, the banner will evolve into a visual representation of how Black history is remembered, honored, and carried forward within our Millikin Campus.
